Severna Park council studies dredging plan

The Greater Severna Park Council (GSPC) is studying whether to support a county proposal on creek dredging.

The county has asked the Army Corps of Engineers, which is dredging Dividing Creek and Buckingham Cove, to include areas that had navigable channels in the past.

The Department of Public Works wants to dredge and reopen a boating channel through a tributary of Dividing Creek that feeds the Magothy River. Twenty waterfront owners also have proposed digging spurs from their piers to the main channel, which would be 1,370 feet long and 60 feet wide.

The project must be approved by the Army Corps of Engineers and other federal and state agencies.

The Corps has resisted accepting the full scope of the county's plan. GSPC delegates from the Twin Harbors and Manhattan Beach communities support the county's initiative.

But the GSPC is trying to determine if supporting the county's plan would be in the best interest of the organization as a whole. The council is expected to discuss the issue at its monthly meeting tonight.
