Schaffer holds off Rowe at Winchester


It was the first victory of the season for Hampstead resident Charlie Schaffer in the late models last Sunday at Winchester Speedway.

Schaffer came off of turn 2 to take the lead on lap 21 of the 35-lap feature and never let Will Rowe get closer than one car length.

Rick and Ernie Jones, both of Westminster, were seventh and eighth in the same race, with Rick winning a heat.

Darren Eash of Woodbine made a late bid to win third place in the 25-lap sprint car feature at Lincoln Speedway last Friday. Jesse Wentz of Manchester had won his heat in the sprint cars and finished eighth in the feature.

In the semi-lates, John Moser and Randy Zechman of Westminster were ninth and 10th, respectively.

Former Woodbine resident Cris Eash started slow, but charged backto take sixth at the Williams Grove Speedway last Friday for the 25-lap sprint car.

At Trail-Way Speedway, Westminster's Brad McClellard and +V Mike Stull took second and third, respectively, in the sprint feature. Both men were heat winners.

Bobby Feeser of Millers and Corky Stull of Westminster were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the eight-cylinder stock car feature. Neal Warehime of Finksburg was 10th.

At 75-80 Dragway, Larry Mayne of Mount Airy won the Class I competition for the second week by defeating his brother Joe in the finals.

Dave Belt of Taneytown won the motorcycle class with Norman Wagner of Hampstead the runner-up. Marion Ford of Hampstead was a semifinalist. Josh Wagner of Westminster won the Junior Dragster Class for the second time this season.

Speedway schedules

* Hagerstown Speedway: On Saturday, the Hoosier Tire late models will headline the five-feature program. On May 22 it will be the 13th running of the Shorty Bowers/Bull Durham Memorial for late models. Limited late models, semi-lates, pure stocks and four-cylinder pure stocks will be on the program. On May 29-30, The World of the Outlaws will make a holiday stop. Joining them will be late models in competition. Race time for all events is 7 p.m. with gates opening at 5 p.m. For more information, call the speedway at (301) 582-0640.

* Lincoln Speedway, Carlisle, Pa.: On Saturday, the California Racing Association at Lincoln will begin racing at 7 p.m. The regular triple-card program is planned May 22. Saturday's program begins at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday's at 2 p.m.
