The nation's first National Trails Day will be observed by more than 1,000 trail clubs, conservation organizations and public land managers throughout the country on June 5.
Close to home, the Carroll County Equestrian Council has planned a full day of trail-related and horsy activities to mark the day. If you have not yet checked out the trail system in Carroll County, June 5 will be the day to do it.
The CCEC is leading two guided trail rides: one at the Union Mills Equestrian Trails and one at the Gillis Falls Equestrian Trails. Each trail ride is limited to 30 horses and riders, and pre-registration is a must.
Registration forms can be obtained at the following retail outlets: R. D. Bowman feed store in Westminster; Southern States in Woodbine, Mount Airy, and Westminster; Midway Feed in Sykesville; Carroll County Tack; Arnold's Tack in Taylorsville; Stablemates in Mount Airy; and Charlie's Horse in Hampstead. If you cannot get to any of these places you can call the Carroll County Parks and Recreation Department at (410) 857-2103 and request a registration form.
The charge of $5 per rider will be used for the CCEC show ring project. Riders will have to provide a copy of a current negative Coggins Test for their horses. Horses must be sound with no signs of lameness.
Riders should check their horse's shoes before they set out and should wear protective head gear.
The third activity planned for National Trails Day is a trail cleanup and work day at the Morgan Run Natural Environment Area in Sykesville. The CCEC is coordinating this work under the direction of the local Department of Natural Resources management.
Many recreational groups, educational interest groups, civic organizations and local residents will take part in this effort along with interested equestrians who trail ride. If you would like to participate in the Morgan Run activity call Ranger Frank Ryan at (410) 795-1322.
In other news from the CCEC, Janet Breeding said the last trail clean-up day was a great success. Volunteers were able to reroute part of the trail for erosion control.
Breeding hopes there is a good showing for the trail clean-up at Union Mills on Saturday. Lots of work needs to be done on an almost constant basis to keep these trails safe and clear for everyone.
Call Sonny Biddison at (410) 833-4593 or the Parks and Rec Department at (410) 857-2103 if you would like to participate.
The CCEC will provide a display on National Trails Day at libraries in Eldersburg and Westminster through June. The display will move to the Mount Airy branch in July.
