During the regular season, Mount de Sales escaped with a one-goal victory over Severn.
In yesterday's Association of Independent Schools A Division Tournament semifinal, the Sailors made a clean getaway from the Admirals, taking an early 5-1 lead en route to a 12-8 victory at Mount de Sales.
The win sets up an interesting rematch. No. 7 Mount de Sales (19-0) will play No. 2 Roland Park (12-1-1) in tomorrow's title game at noon at Garrison Forest.
The schools played for the A Division championship in 1985 and in 1986. Mount de Sales lost the title in double overtime in 1986, but the year before, Mount de Sales won 16-10 and finished the season with a 19-0 record.
Sailors coach Bill Held thinks this year's team can do one better in setting a school record with a 20-win season as well as capturing the title.
"We've got good chemistry," Held said. "I think we're going to beat them."
The on-field chemistry was present for the Sailors, not only in scoring, but on defense as well.
"We play a team defense where we are aggressively on everybody, but we always have other people in help positions," Held said.
Junior goalkeeper Audrey Powers had 12 saves on 17 shots. Most of her stops were on free-position shots or shots within 10 feet of the goal.
"On free positions I try to take away the low shot, so I start out low because I can come up quicker,"Powers said.
Paige Regan's goal with 19:09 left to play gave Mount de Sales its largest lead of the game, 9-3.
Severn (5-8-1) scored three unanswered goals to move within 9-6, but it would get no closer.
"That looked more like us and that was what we had been doing all week," Severn coach Cathy Carper said. "We were playing catch-up a lot today and their attack out-ran us."
RF In the initial meeting during the season, Severn did a good job of
guarding Giovana "Jo" Webster, the metro area's leading scorer (111 points). Yesterday, the Admirals had trouble marking Webster and Amy Buck. Webster led all scorers with five goals and Buck added three.
"She [Webster] has the ability to get inside of her opponents and get right in front of the goal," Carper said.
"In the first game, they were beating us to ground balls and we had a lot of turnovers early in the game," said Mount de Sales third-man defender Chrissy Tirocchi. "Today we controlled the ball better."
Emily Franey led the Admirals' scoring attack with three goals and one assist. Teammates Robin Quinton and Brenna Ryan added two goals apiece.
Severn never led, but Joyce Wu's goal at the 19:40 mark tied the score at 1.
The Sailors responded with a 4-0 run, with Buck scoring two goals, and took a 5-1 lead with 12:52 left in the first half.
