County's Festival Day ranges from jazz to war Mother's Day is market theme

Festival Day in Carroll County tomorrow will bring a variety of activities for the whole family throughout the county.

In downtown Westminster, the Flower and Jazz Festival will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with plants, flowers, crafts, food and continuous jazz.

Downtown Westminster also is on the route of the Tour DuPont Bicycle Race, which is scheduled to travel along Railroad Avenue, Main Street and Uniontown Road about 12:30 p.m.

At the Carroll County Farm Museum, 500 S. Center St., the Georgia Volunteers of the 19th Georgia Infantry will have a Civil War Encampment from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The encampment's activities include:

* Drilling and firing demonstration at 11 a.m. both days.

* Artillery demonstration at 11:30 a.m. both days.

* Women's tea at 1 p.m. tomorrow.

* Fashion show at 1 p.m. Sunday.

* Battle at 2 p.m. both days.

* Signal demonstration at 4 p.m. both days.

* Social and dance at 7 p.m. tomorrow.

The Georgia regiment is part of the Confederate Army's Archer's Brigade, named after Confederate Gen. James Archer. He was captured the first day of the battle of Gettysburg.

As soldiers often did during the war, the soldiers will have their families with them, settling into camp on the Farm Museum grounds. Costumes, tents, cooking, games and other entertainment are authenticated from the Civil War period.

Along with the encampment, Farm Museum artisans will demonstrate 19th-century crafts and vocations, and the General Store will be open.

Next door, the Carroll County Farmers' Market will have its Mother's Day Market from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Ag Center with crafts, food, flowers, gifts and more.

For those who like to cook the old-fashioned way, the Herb Festival runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Piney Run Park, 30 Martz Road, Eldersburg. Features include herb cooking and demonstrations, talks, hikes, music, a Maypole dance, and sales of books, crafts and gifts.

Park entrance fees apply for the day: $3 per car for county residents and $4 for out-of-county visitors.

To find out about other cultures without the cost of traveling to another country, visit the "International Festival -- A Circle of Friends" from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the New Windsor Service Center, 500 Main St.

Live international entertainment, ethnic foods and crafts, as well as a children's tent with fun activities, will keep the family busy.
