Optimist Little League parade set for tomorrow PASADENA


Baseball season is already in full swing, but that won't make a difference to the 200-plus youngsters getting ready to march in the annual Fort Smallwood Optimist Little League parade tomorrow.

Marchers will assemble at VFW Post 2462, 1720 Bayside Beach Road, at 9 a.m. and proceed to Cory Park, next to Fort Smallwood Elementary on Poplar Ridge Road.

Joining the T-ball, softball and hardball players and coaches will be the Chesapeake High School Marching Band, Riviera Beach Volunteer Fire Company, Pasadena Kadettes Majorette and Drum Corps, VFW Post 2462 and Auxiliary Color Guard, Little Miss Wendy from Wendy's, Maryland State Police K-9 Division and a rolling contingent of antique cars.

Members of the K-9 Corps will give a demonstration at 10:10 a.m. at the field.

Ball games will be played all day, with refreshments available at the concession stand.

* The Women of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church will sponsor the group's annual flea market from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 15 at the church at 7859 Tick Neck Road.

High Point Elementary School's human relations committee and

PTA are sponsoring a "Parade of Stars" talent show at 7 p.m. May 20 at the Duvall Highway school.

Advance tickets are on sale in the school office for $2. Tickets will be available at the door for $3.

PTA president Carol Mergenthaler said half the proceeds from the show will be donated to a local charity, with the remainder benefiting human relations committee activities.

The Magothy Masqueraders of Magothy United Methodist Church and Youth Fellowship invite everyone to a spaghetti dinner theater featuring a performance of the old-fashioned melodrama "She's Only a Farmer's Daughter," starting at 6:30 p.m. May 21.

The play is complete with a beautiful and tragic heroine to love, a wicked and treacherous villain to hate and a manly hero to cheer, director Mianna Jopp said.

"Audience participation is a must," she added.

Single tickets are $8 each, with discounts available for couples, young children and families. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Dance the night away at the Fort Smallwood Optimist Spring Fling, set for 8 p.m. to midnight June 5 at VFW Post 2462 on Bayside Beach Road.

Tickets are $10 each and include beer, soda, munchies and setups. Music will be provided by a DJ.

Proceeds will benefit FSO community projects.

The Chesapeake Woman's Club is sponsoring a trip to Washington's Kennedy Center for an Aug. 4 matinee performance of the Broadway hit "Phantom of the Opera."

The price is $70 per person, including orchestra seating and bus transportation.

The Chesapeake Christian Center will have its annual Mother-Child banquet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for children and will be on sale through Sunday at the church, 7975 Tick Neck Road.

In celebration of Mother's Day, the church is offering a service at 10:45 a.m. Sunday. All mothers attending will receive a wreath, handmade by the Ladies Ministry.
