Series of gun shots reported caller claims responsibility

An unidentified man claimed responsibility Monday for an early-morning series of gun shots in Columbia and said he plans to kill a police officer, Howard County police said.

The dispatching center received the call about 3:30 a.m., said Sgt. Gary L. Gardner. Calls from six residents who reported hearing gunfire in the Kings Contrivance and Hickory Ridge villages were made between 12:40 a.m. and 3:45 a.m. Monday.

About 2 a.m. Tuesday, residents called police again to report shots being fired on Eden Brook Drive in Kings Contrivance Village.

Police continue to investigate the incidents and have no further information on who the caller is or what his intentions were.

Police have instructed officers to exercise caution on their patrols and routine traffic stops.

"We don't have enough information to know whether it's someone who's a lunatic playing a prank or a lunatic who has serious intentions to shoot a police officer," Sergeant Gardner said.
