Stuhler has way at Hagerstown


9 Westminster's Gary Stuhler got his 53rd career win at Hagerstown Speedway last Saturday night in the 50-lap Stanley Schetrompf Memorial.

Stuhler had complete control of the speedway with a three-second lead by lap 15, and he lapped some of the slower riders.

The night started well for Stuhler by setting the fast time (19.577) for the time trial. The Carroll County resident was better than 43 cars from nine states.

A caution flag went out on lap 30, but Stuhler continued his pace and extended his three-second lead by lap 35.

* Ernie Jones of Westminster put in his best effort of the season for a fourth-place finish at Winchester Speedway's late-model feature. Charlie Schaffer of Hampstead was seventh in the same race.

* At the 75-80 Dragway, Larry Mayne of Mount Airy split first place in his Monza in the Class I competition.

Norman Wagner of Hampstead won the Motorcycle Class, and Marion Ford of Hampstead was runner-up.

Corey Hess of Taneytown was a runner-up in the Class II competition, and Sykesville's Roger Jorss was a quarterfinalist.

Speedway schedule

* Hagerstown Speedway, Hagerstown: On Saturday, the spring championships races for limited late models, semi-lates, pure stocks and four-cylinder pure stocks are scheduled.

The late models have a 25-lap main event.

On May 15, the late models will headline the five-feature program, and on May 22, it will be the 13th running of the Shorty Bowers/Bull Durham Memorial for late models.

Limited late models, semi-lates, pure stocks and four-cylinder pure stocks will be on the program.

* Lincoln Speedway, Carlisle, Pa.: Today the first Lincoln enduro begins at 2 p.m.
