CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Kevin Pehlke scored five goals to lead No. 7 Virginia to a 15-9 victory over UMBC in the Cavaliers' regular-season finale yesterday at Klockner Stadium.

The Retrievers trailed 7-5 at halftime, and Pehlke (Calvert Hall) scored four third-quarter goals to give Virginia an 11-7 lead going into the final period.

Jamie Batley led UMBC (6-7) with five goals to give him a team-high 61 points on the season. Jason Smith added two goals for the Retrievers to make him the sixth player in school history to reach 100 career goals.

Virginia (9-4) outshot UMBC 67-26, but Retrievers goalie Steve Gorski made 22 saves to keep the game close.

UMBC closes out its season against Maryland Saturday. Virginia does not play again until the first round of the NCAA tournament, which begins May 15.
