Eleven runs. 15 hits. 23 base runners.
And that was just for the losers.
Yesterday's Maryland Scholastic Association Armstrong Conference A League game at Calvert Hall was anything but a pitchers' duel.
After nearly three hours, 278 pitches and two or three major mood swings, the No. 3 Cardinals walked away with a 14-11 win over No. 8 Loyola.
But it didn't come easily.
Every time Calvert Hall (4-1 in the league, 6-1 overall) took the lead, Loyola (3-1, 4-1) answered with runs of its own.
"I thought we had them out of the game a couple times," said Calvert Hall coach Joe Binder, whose team held a five-run lead as late as the sixth inning before Loyola came back to tie.
"I thought we were going pretty good, but they hung in there," Binder said. "It wasn't an easy game to win."
Calvert Hall held leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 10-5 -- the latter of which was in the fifth inning -- yet still needed a four-run sixth to put the game out of reach.
The Cardinals benefited from Loyola's wildness on the mound, reaching base eight times via the walk and once on a hit batsman.
They scored 12 runs in the final three innings on only eight hits.
"We were definitely trying to be patient," said Calvert Hall's Larry Marino, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a sacrifice fly. "We were just trying to wait for our pitch."
Loyola starter Eric Francovic was shaky in his second start since recovering from a shoulder separation. The right-hander threw 85 pitches in 3 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits, six walks and eight earned runs.
But Cardinals starter Brian Matz had his troubles as well, giving up 11hits in his five innings of work.
Neither figured in the decision.
Marino pitched the final two innings to pick up the win.
"They were swinging the bat really well," said Marino. "I was just trying to mix it up and get my pitches over."
With the game tied at 10-10 in the sixth, Jason Dean began the inning with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on Jason Reinhart's infield single. Tom Pilarski then singled to left, scoring Dean and giving the Cardinals an 11-10 lead.
A Loyola error, Josh Itzoe's sacrifice bunt and Paul Barabasz's sacrifice fly gave Calvert Hall a 14-10 lead at the end of six.
Loyola tried to rally one last time, scoring once and placing runners on first and third, but Joe Coates struck out to end the threat.
Other Cardinals with multiple hits were Kevin Brooks (2-for-4) and Pilarski (3-for-4). Jimmy Silvestri reached base five times for the Dons, on a double, triple and three errors; Chris Marshall went 4-for-4 with two doubles; and Jason Smith added three hits.
As the sun began to set over the Calvert Hall field, it was clear to both sides that this one was one for the books.
"These kinds of games give me ulcers, but they're great," Loyola coach Dave McCann said.
