Kiwanis Club to hear of Crofton's future WEST COUNTY -- Crofton * Odenton * Fort Meade * Gambrills


Patricia Florestano, a University of Maryland professor and former chairwoman of the Crofton Civic Association Task Force studying the future of Crofton, is the guest speaker at the Crofton Kiwanis Club meeting at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Crofton Country Club Activities Room. She is to explain the conclusions of the task force.


Spring is in the air and that can only mean one thing: spring cleaning. And Anne Arundel County will provide a place for you to drop off those unwanted household chemicals.

The hazardous waste drop-off is planned from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Department of Public Works, 1 Harry S. Truman Parkway in Annapolis and county Fire Department Headquarters Veterans Highway in Millersville.

The county accepts unwanted or unusable household products containing hazardous chemicals such as oil-based paint, paint solvents, pesticides, cleaners, batteries, contaminated motor oil and pool chemicals. They will not accept medical waste, explosives, smoke alarms, propane tanks or other compressed gas tanks.

The Bowie-Crofton Camera Club will hold a competition on Monday. Topics for other April meetings include "Lighting and Special Effects in Camera" by Fil Hunter on April 19 and "Black and White" by Jason Jem, senior photographic engineer with Ilford Photo, on April 26. Rep. Steny H. Hoyer, D-5th, will hold his first town meeting in Anne Arundel County at 7:30 tonight at the Arundel Volunteer Fire Hall on Route 424. He will answer questions concerning local and national issues.


How many of you know that the Crofton Athletic Council is celebrating its 25th year of service to local kids? To celebrate, the CAC is collecting recipes for a cookbook. The Crofton Middle School String Orchestra performed at the Anne Arundel County Solo and Ensemble Festival on Feb. 27 at " Old Mill Middle School.

Us Kids, a support group for children ages 6-13 whose parents have separated, divorced or remarried, meets every Monday at All Saints Lutheran Church in Bowie. Parental participation is required. Call Janis Thompson, 464-8385, to preregister and receive more details.


You still have time to register your kids for spring sports. The programs include boys and girls lacrosse, fall cheerleading, baseball, softball and t-ball. Boys lacrosse is $40; girls lacrosse, $30; and fall cheerleading, $40. Baseball, softball and t-ball are $25 if parents volunteer up to 10 hours in the baseball program. If not, the cost is $35. After March 31, all fees will increase by $10. The annual family membership fee of $30 also is required at spring registration. Registration forms are available at the Crofton Library and in the CAC newsletter.

You still have time to sign up your child for the one-day Arundel High School Baseball Camp conducted by Arundel baseball coach Bernie Walters and his players.
