Johns Hopkins swimming coach George Kennedy was named NCAA Division III Coach of the Year yesterday.

Kennedy, who completed his eighth year as coach, led the men's team to a fourth-place finish at the national championships at Emory University last weekend.

The team set seven school records and had national champions in senior Eric Steidinger in the 50-meter freestyle and freshman Chris Ornee in the 100 backstroke.

"The main thing was our guys made sacrifices all year," said Kennedy, 37. "The best thing about this team was they did everything they could to be successful. It's a real special group and I was proud to be a part of it."

Johns Hopkins won the University Athletic Association title for the fifth consecutive season. The team previously had won 18 straight Middle Athletic Conference crowns.
