Two exhibits of print-makers' art offer a range of techniques, quality


Among the exhibits on view during the 21st Souther Graphics Council Conference, which takes place in Baltimore tomorrow through Saturday, are two shows at college galleries just two blocks apart, one of which is considerably better than the other.

The prize goes to the Sixth National Drawing and Print Competitive Exhibition at Notre Dame College. This year's show received about 140 entries from all over the country, and Cynthia Wayne, executive director of Pyramid Atlantic Center for Hand Papermaking near Washington, was the capable juror.

The 26 works she picked from 15 states and Washington constitute a show consistent in quality but varied in technique, subject matter and look.

Among the standouts are Donald Depuydt's "Untitled #14," a tour de force that combines images of classical figures with a highly colored abstract design; Pamela DeLaura's "No Clearance," with its complexities of space, shape and tone; Tonia Matthews' beautiful little "Tea Series,"its warmth and softness of color providing ample mood even in a very small space; the trompe l'oeil effect of Cathie Tyler's drawing "Ode to Descartes"; and Paul Dockter's monoprint "843:320," which looks like a simple blue field of color at first but in which more and more appears as you continue to look at it.

The Maryland Printmakers exhibit at Loyola College also contains a wide variety of works, but it has its drawbacks. There's just too much in it, for one thing; the 66 works are hung in stacks of two or three on the wall, salon style, which gets in a lot but makes it hard to see some of the works. The quality varies, too. There's some good work here, enough to make a visit worthwhile, but there's some not-so-good work, so that the show as a whole leaves an ambiguous impression.

Some of these prints stand out, however. Among them are Susan Main's "Untitled," an etching and monoprint with a richness of textures and an overall beauty of image; "A Sound Endeavor," a monoprint, screenprint, collage and handcoloring by Simone Osthoff, Sam Peters and Phyllis Wright that is indebted to Jasper Johns but effective nevertheless; Susanne Carmack's "Inner Spirit," reminiscent of Japanese painting; Dan Kuhne's monoprint "Sunday Morning on the Magothy River," reminiscent of Monet; and Nina Birch's and watercolor "Phoenix II," a commanding image.
