Two Woodlawn youths were arrested early Saturday on charges of theft and possession of burglar tools after they were caught stealing a car in the village of Long Reach, Howard County Police said.
The 15-year-olds were breaking into a 1992 Honda Accord at 1:45 a.m. in the 6100 block of Major's Lane in Columbia when residents alerted police, officers said. On arriving, police said, they saw the teen-agers driving the car out of the Treover Condominiums parking lot. When the boys caught sight of police, they left the car and fled on foot toward Jeffers Hill Elementary, where a K-9 officer apprehended them.
Police said the youths had arrived at the scene in a different 1992 Honda Accord that was stolen earlier in the evening from the Dorsey Hall area.
The boys abandoned the car when it broke down, police said.
Each youth was charged with two counts of theft in the incidents. One youngster also was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia when police discovered he was carrying marijuana rolling papers. The youths were released to a parent and guardian.
