High school baseball: Players to watch

* Bobby Bowman, Liberty, Sr., pitcher -- Was 1-5 for the luckless Lions last season. But should have a much better record this year as the team hopes to improve upon a 2-15 mark. Will play some shortstop. Hit .288 last season.

* Doug Coppeler, Liberty, Sr., pitcher -- Not a dominating pitcher but is capable of winning games if he gets offensive and defensive support. Also will play some center field.

* Mike Davidson, Liberty, Sr., right fielder -- Hit. 286 last season and will need to improve on that average if the Lions hope to make it to the state Class 2A regionals and battle South Carroll and Westminster for top county honors.

* Todd Dorsey, Westminster, Sr., center fielder -- You name it, Dorsey can do it on the baseball field. Hit, run, field and throw. Gets a great jump on the ball in center and might wind up playing baseball at Georgia Tech.

* John Engel, Francis Scott Key, Sr., pitcher -- Will out-think hitters on many occasions. Finds a way to get the job done. Pitched against three-time defending state Class 1A champion Brunswick last spring in the 1A Region I tournament final.

* Charlie Kuykendall, South Carroll, Sr., left fielder -- Probably will be the most feared hitter in the county this season. Hit .508 last season. Pitched one game and won it.

* Adam Pfieffer, Westminster, Sr., catcher -- Has the perfect stocky build for a catcher and can gun the ball to second base. One of six starters back for the Owls, who went 14-6 last season.

* Jason Smith, Francis Scott Key, Sr., pitcher -- Has good control and velocity. Ball moves a lot and is almost always down in the strike zone. One of the reasons that Key is expected to improve upon last year's 9-11 record.

* Brian Yanick, South Carroll, Sr., catcher -- A two-time All-Central Maryland Conference selection who can throw and hit (.417 last year and .384 for career). Not too many high school base runners are going to steal on Yanick.
