2 single-car crashes kill 3 on rural roads Speed, error suspected in both

Speed and driver error apparently caused two single-car accidents that left three people dead on rural roads between Friday afternoon and yesterday morning, state police said.

In Somerset County about 3 p.m. Friday, two men were pronounced dead at the scene when their 1976 Ford struck a tree.

The driver, Louis Elwood Jones, 40, and the passenger, Lamont Keith Jones, 24, died when their car crossed the center line on McCormick Swamp Road and left the roadway, police said.

Whether the victims -- both residents of Princess Anne -- were related was not known, police said.

In Cecil County, an 87-year-old woman riding in a 1991 Honda Accord driven by a daughter died after a 10 a.m. crash yesterday.

The victim, Lillian Esther Castner of North East, was dead on arrival at Union Hospital of Cecil County in Elkton, according to police.

The driver, Beverly Anna Cantler, 45, of the 100 block of W. Shady Beach Road in North East, was taken by ambulance to Union Hospital with unknown injuries.

She was in serious condition later yesterday.

Police said Mrs. Cantler's car was headed north on state Route 272 when it ran a red light at U.S. Route 40 and traveled a short distance before striking a curb.

The car went into the air and landed in a ditch, coming to a stop after striking a culvert.
