Linthicum-Ferndale Yellow Jackets split two games


The Linthicum-Ferndale Yellow Jackets 11-12 boys basketball team beat Lake Shore, 27-19, in the Anne Arundel Gridiron Rebels Sunday League matchup last weekend at North County High.

The Yellow Jackets used a strong defense to take a 12-8 halftime lead and then used their transition game to extend the lead to 23-14 after three quarters.

David Dolch led the Yellow Jackets with 14 points and Ryan George added seven. Adam Sutton chipped in three for the victors and Joe Anarino and Eric Larson contributed two points and one, respectively.

In other action last week, the Yellow Jackets dropped a 44-42 decision to the Annapolis All-Stars.

The game was tied, 26-26, at the half and the Yellow Jackets led by three after the third quarter, but the All-Stars hit their three-pointers down the stretch to secure the win.

Dolch led the way for Linthicum-Ferndale with 23 points, followed by Anarino with 10 and George with with four. Chad Brown and Adam Sutton scored two points each in the losing effort, and teammate Mike Sutton added one.

* The Linthicum-Ferndale Hornets won three games last week in the Linthicum-Ferndale 11-12 Intramural Tournament at Brooklyn Park Middle School.

In the first game, the Hornets jumped out to a 12-7 halftime lead before defeating Dave's, 28-19. Chad Brown led the Hornets with 10 points and Brian Broomell added eight. Dominic Butera and Ben Carr scored four points apiece and Jeremy Smitley added two.

Dave's was led by Erik Larson with 13 points and Jason Brown with four.

In the second game, the Hornets trailed 15-14 at halftime, but escaped with a 35-26 victory over Ron's.

Chad Brown again led all scorers with 21 points. Carr and Butera added five each, and Broomell and Greg Care scored two each. Smitley and Justin Hibbard were cited by coach Ron Brown for their "solid defensive efforts."

Jeremy Robinson led Ron's with 10 points, and teammate Bryan Ashburn added nine.

The Hornets' third victim was Curt's, which they beat, 37-13.

Chad Brown scored a game-high 18 points, and Care, Carr and Butera added four apiece. Hibbard helped out with three points, and Broomell and Smitley chipped in two points each.

Scott Foster paced Curt's with nine points.

* 8-10 boys -- The Severna Park Green Hornets (40-4) shot 53 percent from the field in a 55-25 win over Bear Creek in the opening round of the Cockeysville Basketball Tournament last week.

Gil Goodrich paced the Hornets with 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting. Dion Gough added 10 points on 5-for-8 shooting to go with four rebounds. Richard Tuohey pitched in seven points and four rebounds, and Joe Burke and David Wagner had four points each.

Derek Dixon (five rebounds), Gavin Floyd, Trevor Quinn, Nick Richards (four rebounds) and David Williams all had two points.

The Hornets will participate in the Arbutus and Crofton tournaments this weekend.

Junior wrestling

Despite the blizzard, the Maryland-Virginia state wrestling tournament was conducted last weekend at Western Maryland College in Westminster.

Three Anne Arundel County Junior Wrestling League wrestlers placed in the one-day tournament that attracted 49 teams.

In the 80-pound weight class, Mike Levasseur of Mountain Road Optimist emerged as runner-up after being defeated in the finals by Matt Gallagher of the Bandits.

Carl Cicchetti III of the Raiders defeated Eric Shafer of Severna Park in the finals, 2-1, to take third. Isaac Heartel of Crofton pinned Leif Barstad of Golden Ring in the third period to finish third.

Some county wrestlers will participate in the Eastern National district qualifier March 27 at Annapolis High School.

* The Severna Park Junior League Wrestling team placed two of its members in the winners' circle in last weekend's Navy-Lehigh Junior Wrestling Championships.

Mike Stewart (80 pounds) and Josh White (122) took first place in their weight classes, and Eric Schafer (95) and Brian Kingsbury (122) finished third. John Horrigan (100) took fourth place, and Rick Boulay captured fifth.

White was voted as Most Valuable Wrestler for the tournament, as his team placed seventh in the 26-team event.
