1 a.m.-5 a.m. Tornadoes touch down in 15 Florida counties. At least 16 deaths are reported.

11:14 a.m. High tide hits Ocean City, but there little damage. Delaware resorts have more trouble. Dewey Beach is evacuated.

12 p.m. Winds of 80 mph halt ferry service to North Carolina's

Outer Banks.

4 p.m. Mass Transit Administration halts public bus service in Baltimore.

6:20 p.m. Barometric pressure drops to 28.51 inches -- lowest recorded in the Baltimore area.

7 p.m. All interstate highways in Pennsylvania are closed, as are portions of Interstates 24, 40, 64, 65, 68, 70, 75, 81 in Maryland, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia. Airports have shut in New York City, Washington, Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Atlanta; Greenville, S.C.; Manchester, N.H.; Providence, R.I.

9 p.m. All major roads west of Frederick are closed.
