Barbara Walker named principal at Runnymede

The Board of Education has appointed Barbara C. Walker to be the first principal at Runnymede Elementary School, scheduled to open in September.

Ms. Walker has been assistant principal at Taneytown Elementary School since 1989. Many of the children who attend that school will switch to Runnymede when it opens.

She has 14 years of experience, 11 of them in Carroll County. Before coming to Carroll in 1982, she taught in Delaware and Pennsylvania.

Ms. Walker lives on Littlestown Pike in Westminster. She has a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Delaware and a master's degree in education from Edinboro State College. She has completed additional graduate study at Western Maryland College.

In other action, the board hired Gregory J. Bricca as teacher in charge of the evening high school program; James G. Brown as a tutor; Sandra A. Costick as a home teacher; and Mark Tonti as an after-school care director and group leader.

Board approves plans for new school building

School board members approved architectural drawings for the building that will replace New Windsor Middle School at their meeting yesterday.

The school system now can use the drawings and specifications to seek bids from contractors for the school, which is expected to cost about $9 million.

The building will be about a quarter of a mile west of the crowded and out-of-date New Windsor Middle -- the county's oldest middle school -- on Green Valley Road.

The new school will feature a high-technology area to provide students with computers and real-life applications of skills in aeronautics, robotics, desk-top publishing and bridge-building, school officials say.
