The body of a newborn was found floating yesterday in the Outer Harbor off Canton in Southeast Baltimore, police said.
About 3:30 p.m., a dockworker at a firm in the 2100 block of S. Clinton St. spotted the body floating face down in the water about 6 feet from shore, said Agent Doug Price, a police spokesman.
The body, identified as Baby Doe pending location of the mother, was taken to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy, Agent Price said.
The body had been in the water for several days, police said, and the umbilical cord was still attached.
The race or sex of the infant was not determined.
An investigation is continuing, police said.
In a separate case, the bullet-riddled body of a 21-year-old Northwest Baltimore man was found by police about 2:40 a.m. yesterday.
Responding to a report of gunshots, police found the body of Vance Eugene Dennis in the 2200 block of Reisterstown Road.
Mr. Dennis, of the 3900 block of Liberty Heights Ave., had been shot numerous times, in the neck, chest, back, left arm, right shoulder and buttocks, police said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police followed a trail of blood back to the 2200 block of Lynnbrook Ave., one block east, where the shooting occurred. Police said that it did not appear that robbery was the motive and that they had no suspects.
The slaying was the 58th in the city so far this year, two fewer than at the same time last year, police said.
