Centennial High graduate helps rescue fishermen

Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class John A. Doll, son of Diane R. Kowalski of the Village of Wilde Lake, took part in a Coast Guard rescue of three crewmen from a sinking fishing vessel. He received the Humanitarian Service Medal.

Petty Officer Doll, who is assigned to the Coast Guard Air Station in Houston, is a rescue swimmer aboard the HH-65A Dolphin helicopter, which answered the distress call. A few minutes after the first call for help, radio communication with the boat was lost. The vessel later sank about 60 miles south of Freeport, Texas, in the Gulf of Mexico.

After a U.S. Coast Guard jet spotted the survivors, the helicopter's rescue swimmer was lowered into the water.

The fishing boat crew members were helped into a rescue basket and hoisted to the helicopter, less than one hour and 45 minutes after the call for help had been received by the Coast Guard.

The medal was awarded for extraordinary service during the period from Oct. 1, 1991, through November 1992. During this period, the men and women of the Coast Guard undertook several massive operations.

Petty Officer Doll graduated Centennial High School in Ellicott City in 1988.
