Lauren Velten, a student at St. Jane Frances Elementary School, was the sixth-grade winner of the Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest sponsored by the YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County.
She read her essay, describing what Dr. King would tell her class if he were alive today, during an awards ceremony Feb. 23 at the Severna Park Library.
"He would probably be disappointed with today's world because he believed no man is free until all men are free and today there are still people enslaved by prejudice," Lauren wrote.
First runner-up was Joseph Wassif of the Severn School. Two children, Patrick Blair of St. Jane Frances and Sherry Jones of Severna Park Middle School, tied for second runner-up.
