South Carolina State women beat Coppin for MEAC title


NORFOLK, Va. -- Wanda Wiggins scored 21 points and Sonya Wilson added 20 yesterday to lead South Carolina State (18-11) past Coppin State (20-9), 65-54, in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's tournament final at The Scope.

South Carolina State won its second straight title and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Wiggins scored eight and Wilson seven in a 19-6 Bulldogs run to give South Carolina State a 59-45 lead with less than two minutes left.

Coppin, which had won five straight, got 15 points and 18 rebounds from from Francis Doctor. Karen Russell added 11 points, andLaShawn Scott scored 10 and had 10 rebounds.

The all-tournament team consisted of Wilson, Wiggins, Scott, Tabitha Barber (South Carolina State) and Angela Hill (North Carolina A&T;). Coppin's Russell, Doctor and Tarese Hatch were named to the second team.
