Visual artists and writers are invited to apply for the annual critics' residency program at Maryland Art Place this summer. The critics will be Robert Atkins, author of "Artspeak: A Guide to Contemporary Ideas, Movements and Buzzwords," and Susana Torruella Leval, chief curator at El Museo del Barrio in New York.
After screening artists' slides, Mr. Atkins and Ms. Leval will visit up to a dozen artists' studios and critique their work. Accepted artists will also participate in a MAP show in the fall.
In addition, the visiting critics will select up to six writers to participate in workshops; resulting essays will be published in a catalog.
To apply for the visual arts side of the program, send five properly labeled slides in a plastic viewing sheet, a resume and ++ self-addressed and stamped envelope to MAP by March 26. Slides from the MAP registry of artists will also be considered.

March 29 is the deadline for craftspeople wishing to apply for spaces at Artscape '93's crafts market. Baltimore fiber artist and craft show exhibitor Judith Bird will select 48 exhibitors from throughout the United States for this year's arts festival. Maryland chamber music ensembles are invited to audition for the fifth annual Baltimore Chamber Music Awards, a competition that offers a maximum of three $2,000 awards and features appearances at Artscape, the city's festival of the arts. The jurors are violinist Herbert Greenberg, concertmaster of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and French horn player Barry Tuckwell, conductor of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra.
