Name: John Isaac of Arnold.
Accomplishments/Interests: John Isaac has worked as a volunteer for five years for Bethany Christian Services (BCS), a national pregnancy and adoption counseling agency. The local chapter, based in Crofton, is state licensed.
Retired as the head of the county Department of Social Services and an adoptive father, Mr. Isaac is well-versed in the many facets of adoption and counseling.
He helps organize fund-raisers, maintains mailing and contributor lists and is the board treasurer.
From 1985 to 1987, he served as director of the Crofton office.
He also is on the national board of directors.
Mr. Isaac says the local chapter of BCS, founded in 1978 by Graham and Libbie Gutsche, placed 54 children with families last year, including three children with Down syndrome.
"No one is turned away," Mr. Isaac says of those who come to the agency for help.
The agency makes every effort to ensure babies are placed in a stable and loving family by doing thorough "adoption homework," he says.
Mr. Isaac and his wife, Janet, have an adopted son John, 35, in addition to three biological daughters.
His wife is involved with a pregnancy counseling center in Prince George's County.
Occasionally Mr. Isaac and his son sit in on meetings to answer questions and offer encouragement to women considering adoption.
Volunteer's Comments: Having an adopted son, Mr. Isaac says he has "good reason to believe in this service" and his work.
Organization's Comments: Aleta Allen, the public relations coordinator for BCS in Crofton, says Mr. Isaac does "whatever needs to be done and he is always a great help to the staff."
