Jake Dermer hit a jumper with 17 seconds remaining in regulation and Brett Miller followed with a steal, as top-seed Allegany eliminated Glenelg, 64-61, in a state Class 2A, Region I semifinal last night.
Allegany (21-2) advances to the region championship game tomorrow, where it will face No. 2 seed Middletown, which defeated Walkersville, 45-38, last night.
Junior forward D. J. Jessie scored 24 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead Allegany in a come-from-behind win. Dermer added 15 and grabbed nine rebounds, and Chris Powell finished with 13.
"We got them to turn the ball over in key situations and that's one of the big keys of the game," said Allegany coach Toby Erich. "I thought it was a great team effort in the second half. D. J. took control of the boards and Dermer had a big game inside."
Scott Cline scored a game-high 27 and Jason Beall added 18 to lead Glenelg (16-8).
Glenelg had taken a 12-5 lead in early action with Cline taking the ball inside and led 19-18 after the first period. The Gladiators then out-scored Allegany 7-2 in the last minute of the half to take 42-36 halftime lead.
Allegany -- which pressed the entire game -- adjusted its defense in the second half to contain Cline, and the Campers scored the first 12 points to go ahead 48-42. The Campers entered the final quarter leading 50-47. The lead changed hands four times in the final period and Glenelg was leading 61-60 after a bank shot by Beall with 33 seconds left.
