Man gets probation in child abuse

A North Laurel man was ordered to complete five years of probation after pleading guilty to abusing his 10-year-old daughter.

The man, 31, entered a plea agreement for one count of child abuse before Judge Raymond Kane Jr. in Howard Circuit Court yesterday. The man is not being named to protect the girl's identity.

A police report filed in court says the defendant fondled the girl in October and November. The incidents were reported to police by a neighbor.

Judge Kane sentenced the man to five years in prison, but suspended all of the term. He will have to serve all five years if he does not meet the conditions of his probation.

The man, who has no prior convictions, was ordered to seek counseling and to avoid contact with the victim. Joel Abramson, a Columbia attorney who represented the man, told the judge that the defendant started counseling shortly after his arrest.

As part of the plea agreement, 15 other charges, including incest and assault with intent to rape, were dropped by the Howard County state's attorney's office.
