Panthers rout Cougars, 66-44, behind Samaras' 25 Class 4A, Region IV girls

When Shannon Henderson, a 6-foot standout forward, went down early in the second period with a strained neck, Annapolis' Cristi Samaras took over and rallied her team from a 17-9 deficit.

Samaras, a 5-foot-5 junior guard, scored eight straight points to ignite a 12-0 run and finished with a game- high 25 points, as the 18th-ranked Panthers (18-5) routed the Chesapeake Cougars, 66-44, in the Class 4A, Region IV girls basketball playoffs.

Third seed Annapolis advanced to a semifinal at No. 2 seed Severna Park tomorrow.

The 12-0 spurt led by Samaras propelled the Panthers to a 26-21 lead at the half, and they built leads as great as 19 points in the third period and 25 in the final period.
