Two Crofton dentists will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their practice and Children's Dental Health Week by teaching area first-graders about dental hygiene.
Dr. Norman Slovis will be at Crofton Elementary School tomorrow, and Dr. Arnold Slutskin will be at Crofton Woods Elementary School on Feb. 24.
The children will watch a film and learn the essentials of flossing and brushing. Parents are encouraged to reinforce this activity by buying their children new toothbrushes and having dental floss at home.
The two dentists have been lecturing to children for 20 years, trying to help them avoid bad dental care habits, Slutskin said.
Over the years, dentists have become more concerned with preventing problems, rather than waiting for them to arise, Slutskin said.
The two dentists usually begin their lecture by asking how many children had brushed their teeth before coming to school. Typically, about half of the students raise their hands; the other -- 50 percent are proud they didn't. But the nonbrushers become more concerned after the lecture, the dentists say. They even practice flossing.
The Crofton Civic Association would like to hear from anyone interested in being nominated for a seat on the county Board of Education.
An at-large seat will become vacant in July. After a nominating convention, County Executive Robert R. Neall will choose a nominee whose name will be sent to the governor for confirmation.
The association's board of directors has offered endorsements to candidates after hearing their platforms.
