Former infielder Mackanin named manager of Frederick

Pete Mackanin, a career utility infielder in the major leagues who has spent the past seven years managing in the minors, is the new manager of the Frederick Keys.

He has a 491-467 record as a manager, including 199-193 the past three seasons with Nashville, the St. Louis Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate in the American Association. He spent two years at Single-A Peoria and two years at Triple-A Iowa before moving to Nashville.

Mackanin replaces Bobby Miscik, who was promoted to manager of Rochester, the Orioles' Triple-A affiliate. The Keys are the Orioles' Single-A team in the Carolina League. The Keys also hired Larry McCall as pitching coach.

McLemore signs

As expected, the Orioles have signed second baseman Mark McLemore to a Triple-A contract and will invite him to spring training. McLemore, 28, started 53 games with the Orioles last season, splitting the second-base job with Bill Ripken. McLemore hit .246 and was second on the team with 11 stolen bases.

The situation will be different this year, however, with the off-season signing of free agent Harold Reynolds. It is believed McLemore will earn $300,000 plus incentives.

Oates contract

It turns out that the contract manager Johnny Oates signed after the 1991 season wasn't just a two-year deal as originally announced. The club also has an option for 1994, which means the Orioles don't have to worry about an extension for at least another year, although they might not wait that long.

Carnival time

Tickets are on sale for the Orioles Winter Carnival on Jan. 30, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the club level of Oriole Park. There will be autograph booths, baseball card memorabilia and player clinics.
