Sykesville Marine clears basic training

Marine 2nd Lt. Roger C. Meade, son of Roger K. and Svondis E. Meade of Sykesville, recently graduated from basic training.

During the course at Marine Corps Combat Development Command, Quantico, Va., newly commissioned officers are prepared for assignment to the Fleet Marine Force.

The course includes instruction on land navigation, marksmanship, tactics, military law, personnel administration, Marine Corps history and traditions, communications and techniques of military instruction.

Officer candidates also are taught leadership by example and the importance of teamwork in addition to participating in a demanding physical conditioning program.

Lt. Meade is a 1985 graduate of South Carroll High School and 1991 graduate of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, with a bachelor of arts degree.


* Eldersburg: The Sykesville and Gamber fire companies answered a 2-minute call for a fire alarm on Londontown Boulevard at 10:05 a.m. Saturday.

Eldersburg: * The Sykesville, Gamber and Winfield fire companies were out for 45 minutes for a chimney fire on Cherry Tree Lane at 1:12 p.m. Sunday.

Sykesville: * The Sykesville fire company was out for about 35 minutes for a brush fire on Main Street at 4:56 p.m. Sunday.
