California Angels -- Agreed to terms with former Orioles 3B Rene Gonzales on a one-year contract.

Chicago Cubs -- Agreed to terms with OF Willie Wilson on a two-year contract and OF Dwight Smith and IF Tommy Shields on one-year contracts.

Houston Astros -- Claimed 3B Chris Donnels off waivers from the Florida Marlins.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Retained Joe Amalfitano, Mark Cresse, Joe Ferguson, Ben Hines and Ron Perranoski as coaches.

Minnesota Twins -- Agreed to terms with P Gary Wayne on a one-year contract.

New York Mets -- Agreed to terms with former Orioles OF Joe Orsulak on a one-year contract.

Oakland Athletics -- Announced that OF Harold Baines had accepted salary arbitration. Agreed to terms with P Shawn Hillegas on a one-year contract. Named Walter J. Haas chairman. Named Sandy Alderson president and general manager. Named Andy Dolich executive vice president.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Agreed to terms P Larry Andersen on a minor-league contract.

Seattle Mariners -- Agreed to terms with P Dennis Powell on a one-year contract.

Texas Rangers -- Agreed to terms with OF Rob Ducey on a minor-league contract.


Dallas Mavericks -- Placed rookie C Sean Rooks on the injured list. Activated former Yugoslavian national team member Radisav Curcic.

Sacramento Kings -- Placed F-C Marty Conlon on the injured list. Activated G Randy Brown from the injured list.

San Antonio Spurs -- Fired coach Jerry Tarkanian. Named former Maryland G John Lucas coach.


Clemson -- Named Furman assistant head coach Bobby Johnson defensive coordinator. Announced that basketball G Lou Richie, a former reserve at UCLA, has joined the team and will be eligible to play today against The Citadel.

Furman -- Promoted Steve Wilson, assistant football coach, to defensive coordinator.

UMBC -- Named Joy Figueredo softball coach and Jack Crandell softball assistant. Figueredo, who was an assistant with the volleyball team this fall, played volleyball and softball for the Retrievers the past two years. Crandell has coached the Tangerine Machine, a dominant 18-and-under program and developed many All-Metro pitchers with his Anne Arundel Fast Pitch Clinic. Former softball coach Catherine Lavery will remain volleyball coach.

Navy -- Announced that Kevin Havens, Kevin Kozak and Brian Cochran have quit the basketball team.

Pittsburgh -- Named Steve Bird assistant football coach in charge of kickers, receivers and quarterbacks.

Southern -- Named Pete Richardson football coach.

Towson State -- Transferred director of alumni services Bill Stetka to the athletic department as marketing and promotions director. Stetka, a Bel Air graduate, is also chief official scorer for

the Orioles.


Chicago Bears -- Signed RB Bob Christian and WR Barry Wagner from the practice squad. Placed WR Glen Kozlowski (bad back) on IR. Waived long snapper Mark Rodenhauser.

Kansas City Chiefs -- Placed WR Fred Jones on IR. Signed WR Michael Smith.
