New Zealand motor homes

Q: My family is considering a trip to New Zealand, during which we hope to rent a motor home. Where can I get hold of a list of companies that rent them and do we have to rent a different one for the North and South Islands?

A: Motor homes, or camper vans as they are called in New Zealand, are available for rent on both islands and there are no restrictions on taking them from one island to the other. There is no drop-off fee for a van rented in Auckland, on the North Island, and left in Christchurch, on the South Island, although some companies will charge for a drop off outside those two cities. Ask at the time of renting.

Prices range from about $45 a day for a two-berth home in low season (May through September) to $115 a day for a six-berth home in high season (October through April).

The New Zealand Tourism Board publishes a number of brochures that might be of use. The brochures, "Camp, Cabin and Caravan Association Directory," "Conservation Campsites," a map of New Zealand and "The Official New Zealand Vacation Planner 1992-93" can be obtained by calling (800) 388-5494 or writing to the board at Suite 300, 501 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica, Calif. 90401.
