New stretch of North Chatham Road to be opened
Residents of the Woodberry and Brinkleigh neighborhoods will have easier access to U.S. 40 beginning this morning at 10 a.m., when county public works crews open a new stretch of North Chatham Road.
North Chatham Road used to dead end to the north near Church of the Resurrection. The road also ran from Route 40 to the back of the Chatham Mall, where it dead-ended.
The county linked the road to improve traffic flow for residents seeking to travel to Route 40, said Edward Walter, chief of traffic engineering for Howard County.
Labor of love The Elkridge Area Jaycees will sponsor the 15th annual Bowl U.S.A. tournament to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday at Brunswick Normandy Lanes in Ellicott City.
Bowl U.S.A. involves participants collecting donations or pledges for every point they score in a three-game series of bowling. Prizes are awarded to participants based on the amount of money they raise above $35. The bowling fee for three games and shoe rental is $4.

Christmas tree sale slated at Perpetual Help
Our Lady of Perpetual Help church will sell 6- to 8-foot Christmas trees, wreathes and roping from Sunday to Dec. 21.
Trees are $30 to $43. Sale is open from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. weeknights, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays at the church, Ilchester Road in Ellicott City.
* Ellicott City: 3300 block of St. Johns Lane: Someone tampered with a door lock to a 1990 Buick Century on Friday or Saturday, broke the steering column and stole a yellow plastic flashlight and two D cell batteries.
9300 block of Millbrook Road: Someone stole $1,765.46 in
checks and $279.67 in cash and coins from a Taylor Renter Center deposit bag that was left in a locked 1984 Plymouth on Nov. 27. An employee apparently went home sick at 7 p.m. and left the bag in a car instead of depositing the money. At about 11 p.m. the employee noticed the driver's door open and the bag gone.
9100 block of Town and Country Blvd.: Someone stole a $450 Huffy 18-speed bicycle from a ground floor patio on Saturday or Sunday.
3700 block of Chateau Ridge Drive: A $25 mailbox and mail were stolen on Wednesday or Thursday.
4200 block of Montgomery Road: Tools were taken from a barn between Nov. 22 and Sunday.
