Name: Angelita Thomas, 17, of Glen Burnie.
School: Glen Burnie High School.
Accomplishments: Arrived in the area earlier this year from Birmingham, Ala. She is a member of the National Honor Society, 1991-1992. Angelita is a member of the Flag Squad, or color guard, that marches with the school band. Last year, a poem she wrote was published in an anthology, "On The Threshold Of A Dream," but she has no plans to pursue further literary endeavors.
Instead, Angelita's interests include math and science. Last year she took a third-place trophy in geometry at the Birmingham City Math Tournament, and placed first in geometry at the Alabama state math competition. Since moving to the area, she has competed in math tournaments, representing her school as an individual, rather than on a team.
She is active in several school clubs, including charter membership of the Pep Club, which attends sports events to cheer for the school's teams; and membership in the Ebony Cultural Connection, another new group that talks about issues facing youth today, promotes greater awareness of black culture and history, and supports black colleges.
Comments: "I'm very happy to be a senior about to go to college. I've learned a lot at Glen Burnie [High School]. I like my teachers very much."
