THE FIRST TEAM
* Brenna Ryan, Sr., Severn, attack -- An excellent shooter, Ryan came into her own this season. She led Anne Arundel County and the AIS A Division in scoring with 22 goals and five assists after scoring just six goals a year ago. She gained notice for scoring seven goals against Lutheran early in the season -- four short of the national record.
* Lauren Volk, Jr., Loch Raven, attack -- An explosive high-scoring forward for the unbeaten state 2A champs, Volk led the metro area in scoring with 26 goals and five assists. In the big games, she made the big plays, including scoring the game-winner in overtime in the state title game. Volk scored seven of the No. 4 Raiders' 11 playoff goals.
* Peggy Boutilier, Jr., Roland Park, midfield -- An all-around player, Boutilier had 11 goals and four assists for the unbeaten AIS A Division champs. She sparked the No. 2 Reds to a 10-0-3 record and their third straight AIS title (the first two were shared). Strong footwork, stickwork and speed made her equally effective on defense. She is a two-time AIS All-Star.
* Tierney Clark, Sr., Mount Hebron, midfield -- The Player of the Year in Howard County, she led the Vikings to a 9-3-1 record, a second-place finish in the county and a second straight playoff appearance. Clark controlled the middle of the field from her center halfback position, igniting the Vikings' offense. She scored four important goals, two of them leading to overtime victories. The other two won games over Wilde Lake and Glenelg.
* Patti Duffy, Sr., South Carroll, midfield -- Whenever the Cavaliers needed a big play or someone to bail them out, it was usually Duffy. A member of last year's state title team, she had five goals and two assists this season for the Class 3A runners-up. In the Maryland State High School Field Hockey Senior All-Star Game, Duffy was named MVP for the North team.
* Monica Gibson, Sr., Chesapeake-AA, attack -- The Anne Arundel County Player of the Year scored 14 goals and had five assists in leading Chesapeake to the No. 2 seeding in the Class 4A region playoffs. At center forward, she broke the school record for goals in a season and career (26), and proved equally adept at playing inside or outside. With her ability to create shots from anywhere on the field, Gibson also spent some time in the midfield.
* Tinah Houck, Sr., Westminster, midfield -- Houck led the Class 4A runners-up with 17 goals. With probably the hardest shot on this All-Metro team, Houck came close to tying the state title game, a 1-0 loss to Severna Park. An aggressive player who can dominate a game, the 5-foot-11 Houck was the Carroll County Player of the Year. Despite her offensive numbers for the No. 3 Owls, Houck also could play defense. In the State Senior All-Star Game, she scored the only goal for the North team.
* Julie Jakum, Sr., C. Milton Wright, midfield -- The Harford County Player of the Year, Jakum dominated the midfield for her young team. She scored five goals and had four assists, but her major contribution came on transition. An excellent stopper, she made the plays that set the Mustangs' offense in motion. Jakum moved the ball quickly and might have had many more assists had her team been more experienced.
* Jeanne Lekin, Sr., Roland Park, defense -- The anchor of a strong defense for the AIS A Division champions, Lekin demonstrated patience and composure under fire. An excellent interceptor, Lekin read offenses well and anticipated an opponent's next move. With excellent stickwork and good speed, Lekin also could move the ball out and set the Reds' attack in motion. The three-time AIS All-Star, who also plays winter soccer, had two assists.
* Tracy McGarry, Sr., Severna Park, defense -- Anne Arundel County's top defender, McGarry led the No. 1 Falcons to a 1-0 shutout victory over Westminster for the Class 4A title. McGarry anchored a defense that allowed just three goals during the season and notched 13 shutouts. She received the most votes on the Anne Arundel coaches' All-County team.
* Sarah Morse, Sr., Garrison Forest, defense -- An honorable-mention All-Metro pick last year, Morse led a Garrison defense that had five shutouts and never allowed more than one goal in a game. A patient player with excellent defensive instincts, Morse led the Grizzlies into the AIS A Division semifinals where they lost to eventual champ Roland Park, 2-1. Coached by her mother, Micul Ann Morse, she is a two-time AIS All-Star.
* Kelly Naylor, Jr., Oakland Mills, goalie -- Last year's All-Howard County goalie came back with another strong season. Naylor averaged 10 saves and saved 93 percent of her opponents' shots. An All-Metro second-team pick last year, Naylor notched three shutouts and allowed more than one goal only once the entire season. Her highlights included 14 saves in a 1-0 loss to Glenelg and 20 saves in a scoreless tie against Atholton.
