Damascus wins 2A crown, 12-7

COLLEGE PARK — COLLEGE PARK -- Brandt Childs threw his second touchdown pass, a 12-yard toss to Matt Meiklejohn in the third quarter, to give Damascus a 12-7 victory over Walkersville in the Class 2A state title game yesterday at Byrd Stadium.

Childs, who hit six of 12 passes for 63 yards, lofted a pass to Meiklejohn (three catches, 61 yards) in the right corner of the end zone to cap a 65-yard drive with 7:45 left in the quarter. Childs had thrown a 9-yard pass to Jerry Pryor (five catches, 48 yards) in the second quarter to pull Damascus (12-1) within 7-6. Walkersville finished at 12-1.

The Damascus running game, which had been strong all season, gained only 68 yards. Jeremy Vanselous led the strong Damascus defense with 10 tackles.
