Yesterday -- for the first time in the 20-year history of the Maryland Catholic Invitational tournament -- Mount St. Joseph wasn't the team champion.
The 17-time, Maryland Scholastic Association champion Gaels (181 points, second) got individual titles from Shane McCarthy (145, 4-0), Kevin Neville (152, 4-0), Danny DeVivo (160, 4-0) and heavyweight Dave Sunderland (4-0) in the 16-team affair.
But the winner, Prince George's County's Riverdale Baptist Crusaders (211 points), placed 10 of its 12 wrestlers in the top three of their weight classes, with another taking fourth and four champions.
McCarthy, top-ranked by the Maryland State Wrestling Association, won his third title in four years, 10-2, over DeMatha's sixth-ranked Matt Allman, and had an earlier 15- second pin. His top-ranked, MSA champion and All-Metro teammate, Neville, pinned his four opponents in a combined 6:28 for his third straight crown.
Surprising Boys Latin (173 points, third) placed nine wrestlers in the top four, with runners-up Tim Berger (112), Jim Quinn (130) and Chris Smith (171), after placing sixth last year.
Calvert Hall's (95 points, fifth) third-ranked, defending MSA champion Brendan James (130) used three pins and a decision for his title. His teammate, Shawn King (140), was champion after a 4-3 upset of Loyola's fifth-ranked Greg Smith.
