* Blue Ridge College -- The Hallowe'en social held by the students last Wednesday night was enjoyed by all. A comic play entitled "The Old Maids' Convention" was given by the girls; after which, the young people were paired off by an elaborate punchboard chance system, and refreshments were served. The social broke up at 10 o'clock but later events showed that the young gentlemen still celebrate Hallowe'en in the old way.

* Gamber -- On Thursday last, the Protection club raised a Harrison, Reid and Baker pole at this place 100 feet tall. Republicans turned out en masse from this vicinity and other places, several hundred persons having been present, among whom were many ladies who showed their appreciation by their presence. The large pole was raised very easily after all things were in readiness, but a few minutes passed before the Stars and Stripes were flung to the breeze and the meeting then organized by calling Mr. George Prugh, of Freedom, as president, and the following vice presidents were then chosen: Wm. H. Leister, Elisha Ogg, A.N. Zentz, N.L.F. Harden, A.N. Fuss, Frederick Walkling, Lewis Prugh, R.W. Barnes, George T. Gorsuch, Levi Barnes and Thos. Gorsuch.
