Searchers find body of missing canoeist WEST COUNTY/Crofton * Odenton * Fort Meade * Gambrills

Searchers combing the Little Patuxent River at Fort Meade for a canoeist who disappeared Monday found the man's body yesterday morning only 100 yards from the accident site.

The body of Charles L. Redman, 26, of Laurel, was found at 8:45 a.m. submerged in 4 feet of water and trapped under debris, said Don McClow, a spokesman for Fort Meade.

The find ended a 14-hour search by more than 100 people that began

Monday afternoon after Mr. Redman tried to go over a small dam near the Fort Meade Pumping Station. Jessie Redman, 23, of Jessup, watched from the bank as his older brother disappeared under the strong current.

Firefighters from Fort Meade removed the body from the river, near routes 198 and 32, and took it to the morgue at Kimbrough Army Hospital, where the state medical examiner was expected to perform an autopsy.

McClow said officials do not believe Mr. Redman was wearing his life preserver, as it was found Tuesday morning with the canoe about a mile downstream. Officials said canoeing is not allowed on the part of the river that flows through the Army installation.
