AACC runners finish strong


Anne Arundel Community College distinguished itself last weekend in the National Junior College Athletic Association National Cross Country Meet in Tempe, Ariz.

The Pioneers' only female runner, Janine Macmillan, was an honorable mention All-American, and the men's team took eighth in the JuCo District II meet.

Macmillan took 13th place among the women with a time of 20 minutes, 19 seconds over the 5-kilometer course.

She missed All-American status by three places.

Competing in a field of 170 with runners from Kenya, Jamaica, New Zealand, Great Britain, Mexico and Ireland, the Pioneers men placed five in the top 55, good for 212 points and eighth place.

AACC was 17 points from seventh-place Colby, Wis. (195). Lansing, Mich., (37 points) was the overall winner.

Mark Mallonee was the top Pioneers finisher in 33rd place with a clocking of 28:47. Doug Murphy (36th) was right behind at 28:58.

Neal Gilligan was 42nd at 29:16, Joe Dugan (51st) at 30:10 and Dave Taylor (55th) at 31:14.
