Musician asks homeless to Thanksgiving dinner
Musician Larry Griffin remembers what it was like to be down and out in Annapolis. Yesterday, he reached out to the men, women and children he knew from the days he was hooked on drugs, homeless and sleeping in a boatyard.
The conga player with the popular band Mama Jama invited several hundred poor, homeless and hungry families to a sit-down Thanksgiving dinner at the American Legion Post on Forest Drive.
It was the second event for We Care, a loose coalition of advocates for the poor who are trying to help the homeless in Maryland's capital. In February, the group organized a clothing drive to assist 300 poor families.
"You've got a lot of people here, where you don't look at them and spot them as homeless individuals," said a 33-year-old homeless woman who was helping to organize the feast.
She said she worked for the state government for 10 years, but lost her job at the age of 28 and became addicted to crack cocaine.
"It's tough to get by in Annapolis if you can't qualify for Section 8 and you don't have an $8-an-hour job," she said.
More than 50 turkeys were donated for yesterday's feast, as well as all the trimmings, from cranberry spread to stuffing.
Families were invited from the city's 10 public housing communities and the Light House homeless shelter on West Street.
