A 32-year-old Washington man who inexplicably lay down in the middle of a road in Forestville and a 71-year-old Joppa woman were killed in separate traffic accidents, according to the state police.
The latest fatality occurred just after 1 a.m. yesterday, when Charles Abner Newman, of the 1400 block of Ames Place, Washington, lay down in the middle of eastbound Route 214, just east of Harry S. Truman drive in Forestville, and was run over by two cars, police said.
Witnesses told police the victim sat down in the middle of the highway and waited for oncoming traffic before he laid down in the prone position and was run over.
Just before 9 p.m. Friday, Concetta Della Rose, 71, of the 800 block of Falconer Road, in Joppa, was killed when a car in which she was a passenger collided with another vehicle at Belair and Mountain roads in Fallston, according to the state police in Belair.
Police said the accident happened when a 1983 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, operated by David Michael Bowling of the 100 block of Kensington Parkway, Abingdon, pulled into the path of a 1985 Pontiac Sunbird driven by Joanne Theresa Hannon, 42, of the 800 block of Falconer Road, Joppa. Ms. Rose was a passenger in Ms. Hannon's car, they said.
The two deaths brought to 551 the number of people killed in highway traffic accidents in Maryland this year, 71 fewer than this time last year, state police said.
