Chicago White Sox -- Claimed IF Shawn Gilbert (.245 with 31 steals for Triple-A Portland) off waivers from the Minnesota Twins. Promoted Doug Laumann from full-time scout to Midwest scouting supervisor.
Philadelphia Phillies -- Named George Culver manager of Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Dave Cash coach of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
San Diego Padres -- Named Bruce Bochy third-base coach; Dan Radison first-base coach; and Dave Bialas bullpen coach.

Atlanta Hawks -- Announced that injured second-year G Stacey Augmon will return to the team for tonight's game against the Mavericks in Dallas. Augmon, who averaged 13.3 points as a rookie, had minor arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Oct. 30.
Houston Rockets -- Signed C Mark Acres, who played the previous three seasons for the Orlando Magic and his first two seasons with the Boston Celtics. Waived C Tom Copa.
Sacramento Kings -- Placed G Spud Webb (torn wrist ligaments) on injured reserve. Signed G Stan Kimbrough.

NAIA -- Declared Rocky Mountain S Les Meyer ineligible and required Rocky Mountain to forfeit all its football games.
Central Connecticut -- Announced that G Ian Smith, a 1992 graduate of Poly who is spending the year at Milford (Conn.) Academy, will sign a basketball letter of intent. Smith is 6 feet 3, 200 pounds.
Tennessee -- Announced that they have bought out the final two years in the contract of Johnny Majors, football coach. He will relinquish the position at the conclusion of the season.
