Mount Airy's 4-H Clovers are trying to "make a difference" in the lives of young victims of Hurricane Andrew by having a bake sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at Foodrite Groceteria in Mount Airy.
Home-baked cookies, cakes and brownies are being sold to raise money for postage to mail school supplies and personal care items to children in need. The items are being sent to Florida extension agents who have agreed to take the donations directly to schools for distribution.
Ellen Bonde, who spearheaded the collection effort and contacted the "cooperative" extension agents, said boxes of items have been collected by 4-H clubs from Mount Airy and around the county. Three boxes already have been sent to Florida.
The Clovers, a local group that has more than 100 pounds of supplies to mail, would welcome any donations toward postage or a "free ride" for the supplies to the International Mall in Miami.
