Hayes makes Mid-Atlantic quarters

Jimmy Hayes, a losing finalist for the previous two years, posted a pair of 1-up victories as the match-play championship of the Middle Atlantic PGA moved through two rounds at Rolling Road Golf Club yesterday.

Hayes, who had gone 19 holes to beat Bob Dolan in Monday's opening round, edged Mark Spolarich and John McNaney on the 18th green to lead the way into this morning's quarterfinals. In the afternoon round against McNaney, Hayes won with a par at the last hole.

Hillendale CC assistant professional Phil Henry, in the round of eight for the second time in the past five years, had nearly the same nail-biting route, as he scored a 1-up decision over John McCloskey on Monday, then came back to hold off Butch Butler on the 19th hole, and to get by Paul Gooden, 2 and 1.

In the morning, Butler was four down with six holes to play, then rallied to win four holes to square the match. Henry won with a birdie at the first extra hole.
