MOUNT AIRY — MOUNT AIRY -- Two men were killed last night and a third injured in a collision on Interstate 70 between a car, a pickup truck and a new car-carrier, and the pile-up forced police to close the westbound lanes of the highway for several hours.
Trooper First Class Richard E. Ledger said the accident occurred about 7:40 p.m. near Bill Moxley Road about 12 miles east of Frederick near the Carroll County line.
He said a 1981 Ford Mustang driven by a 52-year-old West Virginia man and headed east crossed the median strip and collided head-on with a westbound 1989 pickup truck driven by Michael Lee Hedrick, 26, of the 4400 block of Bennion Road in Silver Spring.
Unable to avoid the collision, the westbound car-carrier driven by Dwayne Scott Bair, 31, of Clear Spring, Washington County, slammed into the car.
The car caught fire, trapping the driver who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Also killed was Mr. Hedrick, whose body was pulled from his pickup truck by rescuers.
