Neighbor charged in attack

Anne Arundel County police arrested and charged a neighbor last night with abducting, raping, stabbing and robbing a 23-year-old Glen Burnie woman early Sunday morning.

The man charged, Ralph Chew, 23, who police said lived in the same apartment complex as the attacked woman, was arrested in Grasonville, Queen Anne's County.

Mr. Chew, of the 300 block of Lori Drive, also was being sought on a warrant accusing him of second-degree rape in an unrelated attack in Pasadena on Nov. 4, police said today.

Police charged Mr. Chew last night with first-degree rape and attempted murder with the attack about 2:30 a.m. Sunday after the young woman arrived at her apartment. She was forced back into her 1992 car, driven to Queenstown Park in Severn, where she was raped. After the assault, she was thrown from the car and stabbed several times in the chest.

The woman was listed in fair and stable condition today at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

"We had been looking for him and had gone to his apartment several times," said county police Sergeant Dennis Bailey. "But once we did that, he probably got word from friends and relatives that we were looking for him and he wasn't going to sit around waiting for us to catch him."

Mr. Chew was scheduled for a hearing in front of a District Court commissioner this morning.
