Loyola College wasn't as close as it thought to making the NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament.
The Greyhounds hoped to make the tournament for the first time since 1987, but their strength-of-schedule index wasn't good enough Men's soccer
for the selection committee. Loyola (16-4-1) played only one team that made the 28-team field, William & Mary. It lost to the Tribe, 1-0, Oct. 30.
Several tournament upsets in conferences that have automatic bids heightened the competition for the 17 at-large bids. West Virginia finished the regular season with seven wins before taking the Atlantic 10 tournament, and James Madison scored two upsets in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament to gain its first NCAA berth in 16 years.
James Madison, William & Mary and defending champion Virginia were the only teams from the South Atlantic Region selected. The Cavaliers, North Carolina State, Creighton and UCLA received first-round byes.
