Why was Liberty coach Dan Jones smiling when the Carroll County boys cross country championship race ended Oct. 30 at Western Maryland College?

Simple. Jones had just watched his Lions finish a surprising second (62 points) in the team competition to runaway Westminster (19).

North Carroll

Panthers first-year field hockey coach Denean Powelson didn't take long to develop a reputation as a giant killer.

When North Carroll ousted Middletown, 3-1, in the opening round of the Class 2A, Region I field hockey tournament Wednesday, it was the third victory this season over a defending state field hockey champion.

South Carroll

Give South Carroll soccer coach Jim Horn a lot of credit for the way he conducted his team Wednesday in a Class 4A-3A, Region III girls soccer mismatch against Western High.

Horn began substituting liberally in the opening minutes of the first half after his star striker Amber Clutter scored three goals in a little less than four minutes for a 3-0 lead.

The Cavaliers went on to take 47 shots in the first half for a 9-0 lead on the way to a 11-0 win.

Westminster

Owls field hockey co-coaches Sue Hooper and Brenda Baker have a luxury that no other coach in Carroll County has.

After every game, Hooper or Baker can decide not to talk to the media and get away with it with no complaints.

OC If one is not in a mood to talk, the other does the interviews.
